Tennessee Historical Facts, Housing Data and Demographics

Tennessee, well known for its country and western singers, was the 16th state to enter the Union and occupies approximately 42,000 square miles in area. According to the 2005 U.S. Census Bureau statistics, the population of Tennessee was estimated to be 5,962,959. The U.S. Census Bureau also reported the number of housing units in 2005 to be approximately 2,637,441. From the 2000 Census Bureau survey, the homeownership rate was calculated at 69.9% as compared to 66.2% nationally and the Median value of owner-occupied housing units in 2000 was $93,000 compared to $119,600 nation wide. Tennessee State Flower

You may also be interested to know that the Iris Iridaceae was named the state flower by the Tennessee Legislature in 1933. Although there are a variety of colors, the purple Iris is commonly accepted as the state flower.
