Housing Data, Population and Demographics

Rhode Island the smallest state of the union, has the longest official name of any state in the United States, "State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations". This state is one of the most densely populated and heavily industrialized states for its size.

For a state that is only 37 miles wide and 48 miles long, it is notable that its shoreline on Narragansett Bay in the Atlantic Ocean runs for 400 miles. Indeed, one of Rhode Island's nicknames is "the Ocean State."

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the 2000 population estimate was reported to be 1,048,319. The total housing units was estimated to be 439,837 in 2000 and the home ownership rate was reported to be 60% in comparison to 66.2% nationwide. The Median value of owner-occupied housing units in 2000 was reportedly $133,000.
