Background
Historically, Pennsylvania was one of the 13 original states joining
the Union in 1778. This mid-Atlantic state is 45,000 square miles in area and, according to the
2006 U.S. Census Bureau statistics, has a population of approximately 12,440,621.
Probably one of the most well known battles of the Civil War was the Battle of Gettysburg fought on July 1st, 2nd
and 3rd in 1863 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania between the Northern and the Southern forces with General Robert E. Lee, commanding
the Confederate Army and General Ulysses S. Grant, commanding the Union Army. It is interesting to note
that it was not until the 1970's that many of the states erected monuments to honor the fallen heroes of one of our
country's most famous battles of the Civil War. Today, walking and driving tours
of this historic battle site are conducted which include an audio-enhanced driving tour.
