New Jersey is a mid-Atlantic state with almost 8,000 square miles in area and almost its entire eastern border on the Atlantic Ocean. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the 2006 population estimate was reported to be 8,724,560. The housing unit estimate in 2005 totaled 3,443,981 and the 2000 home ownership rate was reported to be 65.6% in comparison to 66.2% nationwide. The Median value of owner-occupied housing units in 2000 was reportedly $170,800.
