Background
Massachusetts, a New England state with an Atlantic coastline of about 190 miles is
approximately 7,840 square miles in area according to U.S. Census Bureau statistics. It was one of the original 13 states to join
the Union in 1788. Two of the most influential events in American colonial history accredited with
shaping America's future occurred in Boston, Massachusetts. One was the midnight ride of Paul Revere when
on the evening of April 18, 1775, Paul Revere rode to Lexington, Massachusetts, to warn
Samuel Adams and John Hancock that British troops were coming by sea to arrest them. The pre-arranged signal
from the bell-tower of Christ Church was two lanterns were to be hung if the British were coming by sea
and one if by land. A detailed narrative on the ride of Paul Revere can be viewed at
The Paul Revere House. Another event accredited with shaping America's future
was the Boston Tea party, which occurred on the
evening of Dec. 16, 1773, when a group of indignant colonists, led by Samuel Adams, Paul Revere, and others,
disguised themselves as Native Americans, boarded the English cargo ships and threw the British tea into the
harbor to protest the tea tax imposed by the British Parliament.
