Official State Flower
The "Cherokee Rose" was named the state floral emblem in 1916 after the Cherokee Indians who widely distributed
the plant. Indian folklore suggests the rose is symbolic of the mother's tears along the Trails of Tears
and each time a mother's tear fell to the ground, a rose sprouted. The Cherokee Rose is a waxy white flower with a
large golden center and velvety petals. The rose blooms in early spring and under favorable conditions a
second time in fall.
The Masters PGA Golf Tournament
Augusta, Georgia is host city for the prestigious PGA Masters Golf Tournament.
The tournament began in 1934 and was originally called Augusta National Invitation Tournament until 1939
when it became the Masters. Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts hosted the first annual event in 1934 with Jones playing in 12
tournaments, his best finishing round being 13th in 1934.
The first Tournament was held March 22, 1934, and beginning in 1940, the Masters was scheduled each year during
the first full week in April except during the war in 1943, 1944 and 1945 when cattle and turkeys were raised
on the Augusta National grounds to assist in the war effort.
The Masters has been and is currently one of the most prestigious tournaments in golf with the list of Masters Champions

Craig Wood and more recently Seve Ballesteros, Tom Watson, Jack Nicholas, Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods.
