Official State Flower The official state flower is the California poppy or Eschsholtzia californica. According to official website of the University of Phoenix, the California poppy was cherished by the California Indians as both a source of food and for oil extracted from the plant. Also sometimes known as the flame flower, la amapola, and copa de oro (cup of gold), the poppy grows wild throughout California. It became the state flower in 1903. Every year April 6 is California Poppy Day, and Governor Wilson proclaimed May 13-18, 1996, Poppy Week. The 2005 population estimate according to the U.S. Census Bureau Statistics was 36,132,147 and the housing units in 2005 totaled 12,989,254. It was the 31st state admitted to the Union. Also, based upon the 2000 Census Survey, the homeownership rate was 56.9% versus 66.2% nationwide and the Median value of owner-occupied housing units was $211,500 as compared to $119,600 nationally.
