Historical Facts, City and State Resources
Alaska was the 49th state to be admitted to the Union in 1959.
It was nicknamed "Alayeska" by the natives meaning the "Great Land" because Alaska is the
largest state in the United States and contains the tallest mountain in the United States, Mount McKinley,
